OSUN STATE GOVERNMENT COMMEMORATES 2024 INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

Osun State Commissioner for Health, Barrister Jola Akintola, has emphasized the significance of International Women's Day which is celebrated on 8th of March every year as a global platform to empower women and uphold gender equality.
Speaking at a press conference jointly organized by the State Ministry of Health, State Primary Health Care Development Board, and The Challenges Initiative (TCI), Barrister Akintola underscored the importance of this year's theme, "Inspire Inclusion," which, according to him, calls for actions in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusivity, particularly in healthcare delivery.
He highlighted International Women's Day as a pivotal moment to celebrate women's rights worldwide, with a focus on gender equality, women's empowerment, and reproductive health choices.
Dr. Isiaka Adekunle, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health, emphasized the invaluable roles women play in society, stressing government's commitment to protecting women's health, including the inclusion of cervical cancer and breast cancer screenings in the Imole Free Medical Outreach program.
Representatives from various organizations, including the State Coordinator of WHO, National Primary Health Care Development Board, MSI Reproductive Choices Nigeria, and The Challenges Initiative (TCI), reiterated the theme's focus on investing in women to accelerate progress and promote inclusion. They condemned violence against women and emphasized the importance of gender equality in achieving healthier lives for women and girls.
Mrs. Ololade Margaret Abatan, State Family Planning Program Manager, emphasized the need to include women in family planning programs and other activities, aligning with the theme of the year, "Inspire Inclusion." She highlighted the importance of women's rights to health, particularly in family planning, which plays a crucial role in reducing maternal mortality and improving overall health outcomes.
Also speaking, Dr. Akeem Bello, Director of Public Health, expressed gratitude to the State Government and partners for their support in commemorating International Women's Day. He acknowledged their contributions to making the event a success, underscoring their collective efforts toward promoting gender equality and women empowerment in Osun State.
Highlights of the event were : Media chat with Honourable Commissioner for Health and State Stakeholders, Market campaign/ sensitization rally/ awareness creation, Family Planning as well as Community dialogue and mobilisation.
