NHRC OSUN Advocates for Women's Rights at Courtesy Visit to Ido-Osun Council of Obas

As part of the activities to commemorate the 2024 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the Osun State Office of the National Human Rights Commission visited the Council of Obas in the Ido-Osun Community on Wednesday, November 29, 2024. The courtesy visit aimed to promote the rights of women and girls and foster collaboration with traditional rulers to eliminate gender-based violence in their communities.

Addressing the Council of Obas on behalf of the Osun State Coordinator, Mr. Idowu Akinsola highlighted the pivotal role of traditional institutions in shaping societal norms and protecting human rights. Mr. Akinsola gave an overview of the NHRC's mandate and stressed that the visit was part of the global campaign to raise awareness on issues of violence and discrimination against women and girls.

"The 16 Days of Activism provides an opportunity to strengthen advocacy efforts against gender-based violence. Your leadership and influence as Obas are critical in championing this cause. We urge you to use your esteemed positions to promote and protect the rights of women and girls in your respective communities," Mr. Akinsola stated.

The Obas warmly received the NHRC delegation and pledged their commitment to the cause. Speaking on behalf of the Council, the Secretary to the Council of the Obas assured the NHRC of their readiness to support efforts to safeguard the rights of women and girls. He emphasized that traditional rulers have a moral and cultural obligation to protect all members of their communities, particularly the vulnerable.

"We will ensure that the rights of women and girls are not just promoted but actively protected. Our communities must be safe spaces where everyone, irrespective of gender, can thrive and contribute to societal development," he remarked.
