OSUN FIRST LADY TAKES STRONG STANCE AGAINST FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION
In her unwaivering commitment towards total elimination of female genital mutilation, the First Lady of Osun state, Her Excellency, Chief Mrs Titilola Adeleke joined the nursing student of Osun State general hospital, Asubiaro and other stakeholders to raise awareness on the harmful tradition of female genital mutilation.
Mrs Adeleke noted that FGM is a harmful practice that specifically alters or damages the female genital organs for nonmedical reasons. She stressed out on progress through laws, community-driven advocacy and the involvement of traditional and religious leaders in the elimination of the practice.
In their separate remarks, Mrs Lola Adewale, Director of Gender, Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Social Welfare and Mrs Uzoma Ayodeji, FGM Analyst, United Nation Population Fund (UNPF) appreciate the First Lady for the alliance, increased education and awareness especially in schools and communities to stop the age long cultural practices.
They emphasized the urgency of preventing female children from undergoing genital mutilation, as evidenced by numerous cases of women death during childbirth due to FGM.
Highlight of the event was the presentation of award of excellence to the First Lady as an advocate in amplifying the voices of women in reshaping narratives and finding solutions towards eradicating FGM.
Other personalities at the event include, Mrs Fatima Idris, Program Officer, AHI, Mrs N.D Badru Oladipupo, Provost, Osun state College of Nursing Science, Mrs Adelowokan, Director Nursing Services, Mr Adejuwon Gbadegesin, State PRO, NANNM and Mrs Fatima Obelawo.
