NHRC OSUN Marks 2024 International Human Rights Day with Road Walk and Sensitization Campaign

In commemoration of the 2024 International Human Rights Day, the Osun State Office of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), in collaboration with the Network of NGOs in Osun State (NETNOS), the National Orientation Agency (NOA), and ActionAid, organized a Road Walk and public sensitization campaign across key locations in Osogbo.

The road walk, which took place on December 10, 2024, began at the NHRC State Office and culminated at Akindeko Market. Along the route, participants made strategic stops at Oke Fia, Freedom Park, Old Garage, and Olaiya markets, engaging market women, traders, and passers-by in human rights awareness activities.

At each stop, representatives from the NHRC and its partners enlightened the public about the significance of International Human Rights Day and the powers and functions of the Commission. Key messages included the importance of protecting human rights, ensuring access to justice for victims of violations, and promoting equality and dignity for all.

Market women and members of the public were also sensitized on how to access the services of the NHRC. Flyers detailing the Commission’s mandate, functions, and contact channels were distributed during the event to enhance public awareness.

Speaking during the event, the State Coordinator of the NHRC emphasized the Commission’s commitment to addressing human rights violations in Osun State. "This year's theme for Human Rights Day reminds us of our collective responsibility to promote and protect human rights. Through this road walk and sensitization campaign, we hope to empower residents to stand up for their rights and report any violations," the Coordinator stated.

Participants from NETNOS, NOA, and ActionAid also underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in creating a society free from discrimination, violence, and injustice.

The event was well-received by the public, with many expressing appreciation for the awareness created. A trader at Olaiya Market remarked, "We are grateful for this sensitization. Now we know where to go when we face challenges related to our rights."

NHRC OSUN reiterated its readiness to collaborate with other stakeholders to ensure human rights protection in Osun State.
